W Hotels x Loomstate for Graybeards

W Hotels and Loomstate have partnered up on a fundraising board for Rockaway rebuild group Graybeards. It’s a sweeet board, shaped by Brooklyn’s (well, now he sort-of lives in Rockaway) David Murphy of Imaginary Surf.

Proceeds from the bar will be donated, so come mix and mingle with a nice NY-based surf crowd. The board is up for auction.

Here’s how to win it:

1) Come to the party and snap a photo of the board

2) Share on Instagram and tag #WSURF with your bid (min. $600)

Come Hell or High Water

No sun, no snow?  New York is damn dreary today.  If you’re staying in tonight (especially after a late night at Le Bain), you can still feel the chill of the ocean and get an invigorating rush of adrenalin, from the comfort of your warm couch.  Rent Come Hell or High Water, a recently-released Patagonia documentary about bodysurfing.  Though we’ve only bodysurfed casually as kids, we totally respect the sport – it’s so beautifully basic.  Just me and the sea.

Refreshed Perspective at The Met

Good friend of NYC Urchin, journalist Meghan Keneally, scouts out a new wing at The Met…

Amid this chilly January weather, museum-hopping is a great way to transport yourself to warm and far off lands. With the opening of the New American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can mentally take a step back to earlier tides of our country’s history and get away momentarily.

Works by American greats like Thomas Eatkins, John Singer Sargent and Gilbert Stuart help viewers see the evolution of the colonial style of painting and how it contrasts to their European predecessors.

While many of the works are portraits, the inclusion of landscapes by painters in the Hudson Valley School and Maine’s rough waters as seen by Winslow Homer certainly provide enough nautical amusement for the sea-loving art enthusiasts.

The massive exhibit, which includes painting, sculptures, decorative arts and silver collections, opens its doors to the public on Monday January 16 and is well worth a visit.

-Thanks Meghan!

Sail Away With Mast Brothers

Nibbling on a Mast Brothers chocolate bar can transport you to another world.  Dark chocolate and sea salt carries us to the beach momentarily – this blissful wave crashes once we see the empty (but beautiful-they’re packaging is incredible) wrapper in our hands. If you’re looking for  a longer-lasting euphoric sensation, sail away with Mast Brothers on a week-long trip to Belize!  A little pricier than a chocolate bar we assume, but we were just in Belize and can’t imagine a more fitting spot to vacation with the salty crew.

Danny Meyer’s New Restaurant Rolls out the Sunnyside

Danny Meyer’s newest restaurant North End Grill opened its doors this week. Currently only open for brunch, with alcohol yet to be served, but food is perfection. The open kitchen and fresh seafood bar give the space a very homey atmosphere ideal for friendly banter, yet formal enough to talk business.

The slow poached egg with caviar, scallops with cauliflower and onion rings are a must.

Location: 104 North End Avenue (West side of the Goldman Sachs building)

Brooklyn Gets Brazilian

Hop off the L on Bedford, wander 1.5 blocks and you’re at the beach.  Well, you’re still in Brooklyn, but you can literally dig your toes into the sand at Surf Bar.  The atmosphere is cozy, with the smell of wax hanging in the air (the ceiling is lined in old boards), sandy floors and driftwood-like walls layered with years of dusty surf memerobilia.  If that doesn’t put you in a salty mood, the mesmerizing list of beachy cocktails (we love the coconut mojito) and Shark Attack Chowder will transport you to an island far from Manhattan.

Intrigued? Well, tonight is a good night to venture over, as it’s Brazilian Night!  Expect to be warmly welcomed by our Brazilian buddy, once a pro surfer, now a Brooklynite, content with the swell scene at Surf Bar.  There will be a live Brazilian band and themed cocktails and bites, starting at 9pm. 139 North 6th Street, Williamsburg.

If salt is not in the air tonight (you can catch Brazilian night next Wednesday), Danny Tamberelli (young Pete of Pete & Pete) will be playing a free show with his band Jounce and Pete Francis of Dispatch at Brooklyn Bowl.  Doors at 6, show at 9. See you there.
